About this place

Volkening Heritage Farm is a working 1880s German-American farmstead inside Spring Valley, and it is run as a living history site rather than a museum display. Staff work in period dress doing the actual jobs of the season - the farm is doing in October what a farm would have been doing in October - and the livestock, kitchen garden and buildings are all part of the working operation.

For children it lands far better than a room of labeled objects, because there is something happening and someone to ask about it. For adults it is a genuinely interesting hour on how this part of Illinois was farmed before the subdivisions arrived.

It is seasonal and event-driven: harvest days, seasonal demonstrations and school programs make up much of the calendar, and the quiet weeks are quiet. Check what is on before you go, because the difference between an event day and an ordinary weekday is substantial.

Pair it with the Spring Valley trails and Bison's Bluff and you have a free morning out.
