BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett, IL

About this place

Just west of Schaumburg on Route 59, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is one of the most remarkable buildings in Illinois. Opened in 2004, it was built in the traditional way: about 40,000 pieces of Turkish limestone and Italian Carrara marble were hand-carved in India by some 2,000 artisans, shipped to Bartlett and fitted together like a giant puzzle. The result is a shining white mandir with soaring pinnacles, domes, columns and arches, all covered in detailed carving.

The mandir stands on a 27-acre campus that also includes the haveli, a cultural center with intricately carved wood. Inside the mandir are shrines to Bhagwan Swaminarayan and to Radha-Krishna, Shiva-Parvati, Sita-Ram, Hanuman and Ganesh. The complex won a 2004 Chicago Building Congress Merit Award and is listed among the American Institute of Architects' 150 Great Places in Illinois.

Good to know: there is a strict dress code. Tops must cover shoulders and upper arms, and legwear must reach below the knee; wraps are provided if you need one. Shoes come off before you enter, with cubbies near the entrance. Visiting is free, and group tours can be booked through the mandir's website. Hours change with the season, so check today's hours on the official site or call before you go.
