Almost every free or low-cost thing to do outdoors in Schaumburg traces back to the Park District. It runs the parks and playgrounds, Spring Valley, Bison's Bluff, Volkening Heritage Farm, the recreation centers, the aquatic facilities and the seasonal program calendar that a good deal of local family life is organized around.

The practical value for residents is the program guide. Classes, camps, leagues and workshops run in seasonal blocks, registration opens ahead of each block, and the popular sessions fill quickly - which is the single most useful thing to know if you have just moved here.

For visitors, the value is different: this is where to check whether a facility is open, seasonal or under renovation before driving across town. Several sites in this guide change hours or close entirely between seasons.

Administrative offices are on Beech Drive. Most questions are answered faster by the program calendar than by a phone call, but the phone line is staffed and helpful.
