Spring Valley is the piece of Schaumburg that surprises people who thought the town was all retail and office parks. It is a large protected area of restored prairie, wetland and oak woodland, laced with walking trails, and it is free to walk into.

The trails are flat, well kept and manageable with a stroller on the main routes. Birdlife is the reason a lot of regulars come - the marsh sections are genuinely good in spring and fall migration - but you do not need to know anything about birds to enjoy an hour here. Interpretive signs do a decent job of explaining what you are looking at.

Two other things sit inside the same site: Bison's Bluff nature playground and Volkening Heritage Farm, the 1880s working farm. That combination is what makes Spring Valley a morning rather than a walk - trail, playground, farm, and home for lunch.

Go early on summer weekends for the quiet and the parking. Insect repellent in high summer is not optional near the marsh.
