Volkening Lake is the local walk rather than the destination walk, and it earns its place on that basis. A path loops the water, the ground is flat, the circuit is short enough to fit into a lunch hour and pleasant enough to do twice.

Fishing is the other reason people come. The lake is stocked and it is a reasonable place to put a beginner's rod in the water without much ceremony - Illinois license rules apply to adults, so sort that out first.

Waterfowl are the main wildlife interest, and there are enough of them through the year to keep a small child occupied. Benches are spaced around the loop. There is no café, no admission and no fuss; bring what you need.

It works well as a twenty-minute reset in the middle of a day, and it is one of the better free options in Schaumburg for a walk that does not require planning. Early mornings are the quietest and best.
