If you have ever tried to entertain a six-year-old on a February afternoon in the northwest suburbs, this is the room you end up in. LEGOLAND Discovery Center is an indoor attraction aimed squarely at children roughly three to ten, and it knows exactly who it is for. The centerpiece is a miniature Chicago built entirely from brick, with the skyline, the L and a day-to-night cycle that reliably stops adults in their tracks longer than it stops the kids. Around it sit ride-style attractions, a 4D cinema, themed play zones and build-and-test tables where a child can spend forty minutes on a single car and consider the trip a success.

Plan on two to three hours. Entry is timed, so booking ahead matters more here than at most places on this list - turning up on a school holiday without a slot usually means waiting or being turned away. The attraction sits on the second level at Streets of Woodfield, which makes it easy to pair with lunch and the rest of the center without moving the car.

Worth knowing: this is a young child's venue. Teenagers tend to loop it once and ask what's next.
