Where to Eat in Schaumburg, IL

About this place

Torizen is the kind of restaurant Schaumburg did not have much of ten years ago: a focused Japanese kitchen built around yakitori, where skewers come off the grill in waves and the correct way to eat is to order a few, see how you feel, and order a few more.

That rhythm is the thing to understand before you go. Ordering everything at once flattens the experience; ordering in rounds turns a meal into an evening. The menu runs well beyond chicken - vegetables handle the grill particularly well - and there are rice and noodle dishes for anyone who wants a conventional plate to anchor the table.

The room is small and the counter is the best seat if you like watching the cooking. Two people can eat very well here; six is harder work and worth calling ahead about.

Good for: a date that is not another Italian restaurant, a solo dinner at the counter, or anyone who has worked through Schaumburg's sushi options and wants the other half of Japanese cooking.
