Seasons 52 is the rare chain restaurant that behaves like an independent. The menu is rewritten as the seasons turn, the cooking leans on a wood-fired grill and a brick oven rather than heavy sauces, and portions are calibrated to leave you able to walk afterwards - which, in a stretch of Higgins Road not otherwise known for restraint, is a genuine point of difference.

The wine list is the other reason people choose it: a long by-the-glass selection means a table of four can all drink something different without committing to bottles. Desserts arrive as small glass jars, which sounds gimmicky and works.

The room is dim, comfortable and quiet enough to hold a conversation, so it lands well for a date, a milestone dinner with parents, or a business lunch where you actually need to talk. Reservations are sensible on weekend evenings.

It sits close enough to Woodfield to fold into a shopping day, but it is not a food-court proposition - allow a proper ninety minutes.
