When someone visiting Schaumburg asks where to get proper Chicago deep dish, this is the short answer. Lou Malnati's has been making the same buttercrust pie since 1971 and the Roselle Road location gives you the full version without a drive downtown.

Two things are worth knowing if you have not done this before. First, a deep dish is baked to order and takes the better part of forty-five minutes, so order it the moment you sit down or call ahead - experienced locals do the latter. Second, one pie feeds more people than it looks like it will; a medium between two adults is ambitious.

The room is straightforwardly family-friendly rather than atmospheric, which suits it. Thin crust, salads and sandwiches are on the menu for anyone who does not want to commit to a casserole-depth pizza, and the sausage-and-butter-crust combination is the order most regulars settle on.

Good for: visiting relatives, a Friday night with kids, and the kind of takeout that makes the car smell extraordinary on the way home.
