Woodfield is the gravitational center of Schaumburg. It is one of the largest malls in the country, and on any given weekend a meaningful share of the traffic on Golf Road and Higgins Road is people heading for it. Hundreds of stores across multiple levels, anchor department stores, a food court, full-service restaurants and several attractions that have set up inside it.

Three practical things make the difference between a good visit and a tiring one. Pick an entrance and remember it - the lot is enormous and 'somewhere near the north side' is not a location. Check the directory before you set off if you are going for one specific store; walking the full loop to find it is a genuine mile-plus. And go on a weekday morning if you possibly can.

For visitors it doubles as a rainy-day and deep-winter destination, with enough inside it - food, theater-scale entertainment, attractions - to hold an afternoon without stepping outdoors.

Holiday season is extraordinary and should be attempted only on purpose.
