Streets of Woodfield is the open-air counterpart to the mall across the road, and it does a different job. Rather than a single enclosed building, it is a walkable arrangement of larger-format stores, restaurants and entertainment, which makes it the easier of the two for a specific trip - park, walk to the one place you came for, leave.

The entertainment mix is what earns it a place in this guide: a movie theater, LEGOLAND Discovery Center and a spread of full-service restaurants mean a family can build a whole afternoon here without moving the car. Pair a timed LEGOLAND slot with lunch and you have a plan.

Being open-air cuts both ways in Illinois. It is pleasant from spring to fall and exposed in February, when the mall opposite becomes the more sensible choice.
