Gina Rodriguez’s Directorial Debut ‘House of Guerrero’ Adds Justin Baldoni as Producer

What happened

Gina Rodriguez is preparing to make her theatrical feature directing debut with House of Guerrero, a boxing drama now set up with Justin Baldoni as a producer. The project is being produced by Wayfarer Studios, Rodriguez’s I Can And I Will Productions and 1Community, according to entertainment trade reporting first published by Deadline and later echoed by ComingSoon and Just Jared.

The film centers on a young boxer whose athletic future is interrupted, leading to a final-fight-style comeback story. Current reporting identifies the project’s creative and producing team, but does not yet provide a confirmed cast list, filming start date, release date or distributor.

Why it matters

The announcement is notable for two reasons. First, it marks a new step for Rodriguez, best known to many viewers for her acting work, as she moves into theatrical feature directing. Second, it keeps Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios active in the film development pipeline after a period of heightened public attention around Baldoni’s previous movie work.

For moviegoers in Schaumburg and across Illinois, there is no reported local production connection at this stage. The relevance is broader: this is an early signal of a U.S. film project that could eventually enter the theatrical or streaming marketplace, depending on financing, production progress and distribution decisions.

What the available information shows

The verified details are still limited but concrete. The title is House of Guerrero. Rodriguez is attached to direct. Baldoni is attached as a producer. The production companies named in the reporting are Wayfarer Studios, I Can And I Will Productions and 1Community. The development was publicly reported on September 14, 2026.

The story’s boxing framework also places it in a familiar movie tradition: sports dramas often use training, physical risk and a defining match to explore identity, family pressure, ambition and recovery. What may distinguish this project will depend on the script, casting, tone and Rodriguez’s approach as a first-time theatrical feature director.

Uncertainties to watch

Film development announcements are not the same as a finished movie. Projects can change directors, producers, financing partners, production schedules or release plans before cameras roll. As of now, the public reporting does not establish when production will begin, where it will film or how audiences will see it.

Another open question is how industry and audience attention around Baldoni may affect future coverage of the project. For now, the confirmed news is narrower: he is producing, Rodriguez is directing, and House of Guerrero is in development as a boxing feature.
