Potato Chip Recall Highlights Undeclared Soy Risk

Saratoga Potato Chips LLC has issued an allergy alert for J. HIGGS Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Potato Chips because the product may contain soy that is not declared on the package label, according to a recall notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA notice says the recalled product is sold in 7.75-ounce bags with Best if Used By codes DEC 11 26 and DEC 18 26. The company announcement was dated September 16, 2026, and the FDA posted the alert on September 18, 2026.

The listed distribution states are Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Maryland, through Save A Lot stores. Illinois and Schaumburg were not listed in the FDA notice. The main concern is for people who are allergic to soy, because eating a food with an undeclared allergen can cause a serious or life-threatening reaction.

What Consumers Should Check

People who have this product can look for the product name, bag size, and Best if Used By codes listed in the FDA notice. The company advised consumers to return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a refund.

The FDA notice reported no illnesses to date. That does not remove the concern for people with a soy allergy, because the risk depends on whether a sensitive person eats the product.

Why Undeclared Allergens Matter

Food allergy labeling is meant to help consumers identify ingredients that may trigger allergic reactions. Soy is a common food allergen, and it can appear in many processed foods. When soy is present but not listed on the label, people who rely on labels may not realize they are being exposed.

Allergic reactions can vary. Warning signs may include hives, itching, swelling of the lips or face, stomach symptoms, coughing, wheezing, throat tightness, trouble breathing, dizziness, or fainting. A severe allergic reaction can develop quickly and requires emergency care.

Questions To Ask A Qualified Provider

  • If you or a family member has a known soy allergy, ask a doctor or allergist how to recognize a reaction and when emergency care is needed.
  • Ask a pharmacist or clinician how to read food labels and identify ingredients that may be related to soy.
  • If symptoms occur after eating a recalled food, ask a qualified health professional what follow-up is appropriate. In an emergency, call 911.

What Is Still Uncertain

The FDA notice listed distribution in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Maryland. If the company or FDA updates the recall with additional distribution information, the local relevance could change. For now, no Illinois-specific distribution was identified in the verified recall notice.
